What is Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis Recti is a condition in which the front superficial wall of the abdomen becomes disconnected at the center by the linea alba, a conjunctive tissue that runs down the midline of the abdomen and keeps both sides of the rectus abdominis muscle fused.

Who Experiences Diastasis Recti?

Many pregnant women experience diastasis during and following pregnancy, but it is a condition that can also affect men, especially those carrying extra weight (particularly in the belly). Alternatively, diastasis can occur after excessive weight loss.

During my teaching years, I have detected many men who had diastasis and didn’t know it; they were experiencing issues with their shoulders and lower back, they couldn’t feel their core muscles work and were not able to see improvement through physical training. These are the same issues experienced by postpartum women. If you are a person that lifts heavy objects, sits at a desk all day, drives long hours and you are experiencing any of the issues described above, then you should get your abdomen checked.

Can Diastasis Recti be treated?

The good news is that diastasis is not a permanent condition. We specialize in detecting and treating diastasis. With specific training and guidance, we modify certain exercises that do not strain the front abdominal wall, thus giving time for the superficial muscles to fuse. We also help you recondition your pelvic floor and your transversus abdominis to bring more support to your lower back in order to avoid low back, shoulder and pelvic floor issues.

Diastasis Recti is a condition that cannot be ignored.
